How to use it

  1. Two columns: categories and counts (or amounts); no need to sort first.
  2. Bars are sorted largest first, the line is the cumulative percentage and darker bars are the vital few up to the cutoff.
  3. The categories to tackle first are listed below the chart, ready for a quality report.

Data format example

Copying from a spreadsheet gives this format, with tabs between columns:

Frequently asked questions

How do I bring in data from Excel?

Select the range including headers in Excel, WPS or Google Sheets, copy and paste it into the data box; tabs are detected automatically, and CSV or comma- or semicolon-separated text works too. Thousands separators, currency symbols and percent signs are removed.

Is there a watermark? Can I put it in PowerPoint?

No watermark. PNG exports at twice the chosen size and SVG is vector, so both stay sharp in PowerPoint, Word or print; you can also copy the image and paste it directly.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Data is parsed and drawn in your browser. A share link carries the data after the # in the URL, which is never sent to the server; only people with the link can see it.

How do I read a Pareto chart?

Bars are sorted largest first and the line is the cumulative percentage. The categories before the line crosses 80 % are the vital few; fixing them usually removes most of the problem. You can move the cutoff to 70 % or 90 %.

Pareto chart maker practical guide and common questions

What does a Pareto chart maker do?

Categories with the same name merge and are sorted largest first; those before the cumulative line reaches the cutoff (80 % by default) are the vital few, listed below the chart.

Who is this for, and when is it useful?

Quality, after-sales and managers running 80/20 analysis on complaints, return reasons or customer revenue.

How do I use this Pareto chart maker?

Two columns, categories and counts; they are sorted, cumulative percentages worked out and the vital few up to the cutoff highlighted.

How should I interpret the results?

Pareto analysis assumes categories do not overlap; a large "Other" means the categories are too broad and should be split.

Where is the work performed, and which services receive data?

Sorting, cumulative percentages and the vital few are calculated locally; complaint and return data is never uploaded.
