What happens to transparency in a JPG
Frequently asked questions
Why convert PNG to JPG?
Photos and product shots saved as PNG are often several megabytes. As JPG they usually shrink to a fifth or a tenth of the size and upload easily to marketplaces, email and forms.
Does PNG to JPG lose quality?
JPG is lossy; at the default quality of 92 the difference is usually invisible. Text screenshots and line art can show speckles around edges in JPG, so keep those as PNG.
Will a transparent background turn black?
No. Transparent areas are filled with the Background colour, white by default, and you can pick any colour, such as the pure white Amazon requires for main images.
Can I convert to an exact file size?
Yes. Enter a number under Target size KB, for example 200, and the tool finds the highest quality that fits.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Images are decoded, resized and re-encoded in your browser and downloaded straight away, which suits unreleased product photos and client material.
JPEG, WebP or PNG?
WebP gives the smallest photos and suits websites; use JPEG for older systems, some marketplaces and email; use PNG for icons, logos and screenshots with transparency.
Does processing remove location and other metadata?
Yes. Re-encoded images no longer carry EXIF data (capture time, camera model, GPS location and so on), and orientation is corrected automatically. Files kept as the original are the exception.
What is the difference between PNG and JPG, and when should I convert?
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which suits logos, icons, screenshots and line art; JPG is lossy and has no transparency, but a photo is usually a fifth to a tenth of the PNG size. Convert photos and product shots to JPG when a platform, form or email limits file size or accepts only JPG; keep PNG when you need transparency or crisp text edges.
