JPG to PNG: lossless but larger
Frequently asked questions
Does JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the current pixels losslessly; detail lost in JPG compression cannot be recovered. The benefit is that further edits and saves add no more loss.
Will the background become transparent?
No. JPG has no alpha channel, so the background stays as it is. For a transparent background use the AI background remover, which outputs a transparent PNG.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG uses lossless compression, which cannot squeeze the fine colour variation in photos, so files are usually 2–4 times larger. If you only need compatibility, keep JPG or choose WebP.
Is JPEG different from JPG?
No. They are the same format; .jpg and .jpeg are just two spellings of the extension, and both can be dropped in.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Images are decoded, resized and re-encoded in your browser and downloaded straight away, which suits unreleased product photos and client material.
JPEG, WebP or PNG?
WebP gives the smallest photos and suits websites; use JPEG for older systems, some marketplaces and email; use PNG for icons, logos and screenshots with transparency.
Does processing remove location and other metadata?
Yes. Re-encoded images no longer carry EXIF data (capture time, camera model, GPS location and so on), and orientation is corrected automatically. Files kept as the original are the exception.
Why convert JPG to PNG?
There are three common reasons: software, a template or a platform accepts only PNG; the image will be edited and saved repeatedly, and PNG adds no new compression loss each time; or you will layer transparent elements onto it later. Conversion does not recover detail lost in the JPG or make the background transparent, and a photo as PNG is usually 2–4 times the JPG size.
