Sector engineering FAQs

Why does parallel pump capacity fall short of the sum of individual pumps?

When multiple pumps discharge into a shared header, the combined flow quadratically amplifies frictional pipe resistance, steepening system head. Operating points shift leftward along H-Q curves toward higher head and suppressed flow.

Why must industrial control valve sizing avoid extreme opening limits?

Optimal valve opening falls between 20% and 80% stroke. Operating under 10% stroke produces severe wire-drawing cavitation erosion and hunting instability across narrow throttle gaps; operating above 90% forfeits safety control margin.

Why is nut factor K critical when converting bolt torque to clamp preload?

Only 10% to 15% of tightening torque creates tensile clamping force; the remaining 85% is dissipated in thread and nut-face friction. Dry zinc bolts exhibit K=0.20 while anti-seize paste yields K=0.12. Neglecting K leads to over 50% preload error.
