How to use Steel Weight Calculator

  1. Choose the material grade, or enter a custom density.
  2. Pick the shape and enter dimensions. Pipe can use size and schedule, sheet can use gauges, rebar uses bar sizes and beams can come from the standard section library.
  3. Enter length and quantity, optionally a unit price; results update as you type. Add several items to the list to total an order.

Steel section weight tables: I-beams, H-beams and channels

Rolled sections are listed by their nominal mass per metre, which includes root radii and is closer to actual weight than sharp-corner geometry. Choose “Standard sections” in the calculator to use them directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is steel density 7.85 or 7.86?

Structural and carbon steels are normally calculated at 7.85 g/cm³ (490 lb/ft³); GB/T 706 and EN 10365 section masses also use 7.85. Some references use 7.86 or 7.87, a 0.1–0.3% difference.

Why do square tube corners matter?

Cold-formed hollow sections have outside corner radii of about 2–3 times the wall under EN 10219. Sharp-corner maths overstates weight, especially for thick walls. The calculator uses standard radii by default and lets you switch to sharp corners.

What is the formula for metal weight?

Weight = cross-sectional area × length × density. With millimetres and g/cm³, weight per metre in kg/m = area (mm²) × density ÷ 1000. A Ø20 mm steel bar has 314.16 mm², so 314.16 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 2.466 kg/m.

Why does theoretical weight differ from scale weight?

Theoretical weight uses nominal dimensions. Delivered material has thickness or wall tolerances, rolled radii, galvanizing and coatings, typically ±2–5%. State in the contract whether you settle by theoretical or actual weight.

Can I use inches and pounds?

Yes. Switch to inches for dimensions; results always show kg, lb, kg/m and lb/ft. Length can be m, mm, ft or in, and price can be per kg, lb, tonne, metre, foot or piece.

Can I total several items?

Use “Add to list” to collect different materials, shapes and quantities. The list totals weight and cost and can be copied or exported as CSV for quotations and container planning. It is stored only in this browser.

Theoretical weights use nominal dimensions and densities for quoting, shipping and cutting estimates. Settlement weight follows the contract, mill certificate or actual weighing.

steel weight calculator practical guide and common questions

What does a steel weight calculator do?

Steel theoretical weight uses 7.85 g/cm³. The section library uses nominal masses per metre from EN 10365, GB/T 706 and ASTM A6, which include rolled root radii.

Who is this for, and when is it useful?

Structural engineers, steel stockholders and site material controllers preparing material take-offs.

How do I use this steel weight calculator?

Pick a bar, tube, angle, channel or beam shape and enter its size, or choose an IPE, HEA, HEB, UPN, American W-shape or Chinese GB section, then enter length and count for the total weight.

How should I interpret the results?

Sharp-corner geometry for angles, channels and beams is usually 1–3% below standard masses, so prefer the library where a designation exists. Hollow sections use EN 10219 standard corner radii by default.

Where is the work performed, and which services receive data?

The section library and calculations run locally in your browser; inputs are never uploaded and the list stays in this browser.
