How to use Pipe Weight Calculator

  1. Choose the material grade, or enter a custom density.
  2. Pick the shape and enter dimensions. Pipe can use size and schedule, sheet can use gauges, rebar uses bar sizes and beams can come from the standard section library.
  3. Enter length and quantity, optionally a unit price; results update as you type. Add several items to the list to total an order.

Steel pipe weight chart (ASME B36.10M schedules)

Plain-end carbon steel weights from nominal OD and wall: kg/m = 0.02466 × (OD − wall) × wall in mm. SCH 40 equals STD up to 10", and SCH 80 equals XS up to 8"; select STD or XS in the calculator for larger sizes. For stainless pipe multiply by about 1.01 or switch the material.

Frequently asked questions

What is the steel pipe weight formula?

Carbon steel pipe in kg/m = 0.02466 × (OD − wall) × wall in mm; in lb/ft = 10.69 × (OD − wall) × wall in inches. Multiply by about 1.01 for stainless.

Is schedule 40 the same as STD?

For NPS 10 and smaller, SCH 40 and STD share the same wall. From NPS 12 STD stays at 0.375 in and differs from SCH 40. Likewise SCH 80 equals XS up to NPS 8.

How do DN and NPS correspond?

DN is the metric nominal size and NPS the imperial one, e.g. DN50 = 2" and DN100 = 4". Neither is the actual bore: the outside diameter is fixed while the wall changes with the schedule.

What is the formula for metal weight?

Weight = cross-sectional area × length × density. With millimetres and g/cm³, weight per metre in kg/m = area (mm²) × density ÷ 1000. A Ø20 mm steel bar has 314.16 mm², so 314.16 × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = 2.466 kg/m.

Why does theoretical weight differ from scale weight?

Theoretical weight uses nominal dimensions. Delivered material has thickness or wall tolerances, rolled radii, galvanizing and coatings, typically ±2–5%. State in the contract whether you settle by theoretical or actual weight.

Can I use inches and pounds?

Yes. Switch to inches for dimensions; results always show kg, lb, kg/m and lb/ft. Length can be m, mm, ft or in, and price can be per kg, lb, tonne, metre, foot or piece.

Can I total several items?

Use “Add to list” to collect different materials, shapes and quantities. The list totals weight and cost and can be copied or exported as CSV for quotations and container planning. It is stored only in this browser.

Theoretical weights use nominal dimensions and densities for quoting, shipping and cutting estimates. Settlement weight follows the contract, mill certificate or actual weighing.

pipe weight calculator practical guide and common questions

What does a pipe weight calculator do?

Pipe weight per metre = 0.02466 × (OD − wall) × wall in mm, giving kg/m. NPS fixes the outside diameter and the schedule sets the wall.

Who is this for, and when is it useful?

Piping engineers, pipe stockists, valve and fitting buyers and logistics staff planning loads.

How do I use this pipe weight calculator?

Select NPS/DN with schedule 10, 40, 80, 160, STD or XS to fill outside diameter and wall, or type them directly, then read weight per metre, per foot, per length and for the batch.

How should I interpret the results?

SCH 40 equals STD up to 10 inch and SCH 80 equals XS up to 8 inch. Results are plain-end theoretical weights without bevels, threads or coatings.

Where is the work performed, and which services receive data?

Pipe schedule data loads with the page and calculations run in your browser; no input is uploaded.
