AWG to mm²

Choose a discrete AWG size to calculate its nominal diameter and circular area from the geometric definition. 4/0 and 0000 identify the same size; higher numbers mean thinner conductors.

    Formula and method

    d(in) = 0.005 × 92^((36 − n)/39); d(mm) = 25.4d(in); A(mm²) = πd(mm)²/4. For 4/0, 3/0, 2/0 and 1/0, n is −3, −2, −1 and 0 respectively; otherwise n is the integer AWG size.

    Worked example

36 AWG has a defined diameter of 0.005 in = 0.127 mm and a circular area of approximately 0.012668 mm².

    Assumptions and limits

    • Results are mathematical nominal dimensions for a round solid bare conductor. Standards tables may round diameters, and manufacturing tolerances cause further variation.
    • This conversion does not determine ampacity, voltage drop, temperature rise, insulation diameter or stranded-bundle diameter, and does not select an equivalent IEC nominal cross-section.
    • The supported range is discrete 4/0, 3/0, 2/0, 1/0 and 1–40 AWG. Rounding the area does not establish a compliant cable size.

    Frequently asked questions

Why is 4/0 thicker than 1 AWG?

AWG numbers increase as conductors get thinner. The successive sizes thicker than 1 are 0, 00, 000 and 0000, also written 1/0 through 4/0.

Can I size a fuse or circuit breaker from this result?

Cross-sectional area alone is insufficient. Check conductor material, insulation temperature rating, installation method, grouping, ambient conditions and the applicable electrical code.

AWG to mm² practical guide and common questions

What does AWG to mm² calculate?

    Choose a discrete AWG size to calculate its nominal diameter and circular area from the geometric definition. 4/0 and 0000 identify the same size; higher numbers mean thinner conductors. d(in) = 0.005 × 92^((36 − n)/39); d(mm) = 25.4d(in); A(mm²) = πd(mm)²/4. For 4/0, 3/0, 2/0 and 1/0, n is −3, −2, −1 and 0 respectively; otherwise n is the integer AWG size.

    When is this useful?

36 AWG has a defined diameter of 0.005 in = 0.127 mm and a circular area of approximately 0.012668 mm².

How do I enter the inputs?

Enter the inputs for AWG to mm²: AWG size (4/0 through 40). Calculate, check the units and assumptions, then copy or download the results.

How should I interpret the results?

Results are mathematical nominal dimensions for a round solid bare conductor. Standards tables may round diameters, and manufacturing tolerances cause further variation. This conversion does not determine ampacity, voltage drop, temperature rise, insulation diameter or stranded-bundle diameter, and does not select an equivalent IEC nominal cross-section. The supported range is discrete 4/0, 3/0, 2/0, 1/0 and 1–40 AWG. Rounding the area does not establish a compliant cable size.

    Where are my inputs processed?

AWG to mm² runs in this browser. Inputs are not uploaded to a calculation server; copying and CSV download require your action. The existing site analytics and advertising still load.
