How to use the watts to amps calculator

  1. Choose what to find: current, power or voltage.
  2. Choose DC, single-phase or three-phase AC; use the line voltage for three-phase.
  3. Enter the other two values and the power factor; the result appears immediately.

Watts to amps chart

DC: I = P ÷ V. Single-phase AC: I = P ÷ (V × power factor). Three-phase AC: I = P ÷ (√3 × line voltage × power factor). Single-phase columns assume PF 1 (resistive loads); three-phase columns assume 0.85, typical of motors.

Frequently asked questions

How many amps is 1000 watts?

It depends on the voltage: about 4.35 A at 230 V, 8.33 A at 120 V and 83.3 A at 12 V DC. Divide by the power factor for inductive loads such as motors.

How do you calculate three-phase current?

I = P ÷ (√3 × line voltage × power factor). A 10 kW motor at 400 V with PF 0.85 draws about 17 A.

Can I size breakers and cables from this?

This is the running current. Breaker and cable sizing also depend on motor starting current, ambient temperature, installation method and local codes; check voltage drop with the wire gauge calculator.

Are my inputs uploaded?

No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser and nothing is stored; a share link only carries the values you entered.

Results are for design estimates and part selection; for production and safety-related circuits follow component datasheets, applicable standards and measurements.

watts to amps calculator practical guide and common questions

What does a watts to amps calculator do?

DC: I = P ÷ V; single-phase: I = P ÷ (V × PF); three-phase: I = P ÷ (√3 × line voltage × PF); apparent power S = P ÷ PF.

Who is this for, and when is it useful?

Electricians, equipment sales and export staff and buyers estimating current before choosing plugs and cables.

How do I use this watts to amps calculator?

Choose DC, single-phase or three-phase AC and a power factor, then convert between power (W, kW, hp), current and voltage, with apparent power.

How should I interpret the results?

The result is running current without motor starting current; breaker and cable sizing also depend on installation, ambient temperature and local codes.

Where is the work performed, and which services receive data?

Power, current and voltage conversions run in your browser; no input is uploaded.
