How to use the resistor colour code calculator

  1. Count the bands and choose 3, 4, 5 or 6.
  2. Pick each colour from the first band; the value, tolerance range and temperature coefficient update immediately.
  3. Or type a value below to see the bands it should carry.

Resistor colour code chart (IEC 60062)

Read from the end farthest from the gold or silver band. A 4-band resistor has two digits, a multiplier and a tolerance; a 5-band has three digits; a 6-band adds a temperature coefficient.

Four-band resistors usually carry a gold ± 5% band; five-band precision resistors usually brown ± 1%.

Frequently asked questions

Which end of a resistor do you read from?

Gold and silver only appear as multiplier or tolerance bands, so start from the end away from them. The tolerance band is usually set apart by a wider gap. If neither end is gold or silver, the first band is usually closer to its lead.

What is the difference between 4-band and 5-band resistors?

A 4-band resistor has two significant digits, typically a ± 5% carbon film part; a 5-band resistor has three, typically a ± 1% metal film part. Six bands add a temperature coefficient.

What is brown black black red brown?

Five bands: 1, 0, 0 × 100 = 10,000 Ω, i.e. 10 kΩ ± 1%. The 4-band brown black orange gold is also 10 kΩ, at ± 5%.

Are my inputs uploaded?

No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser and nothing is stored; a share link only carries the values you entered.

Results are for design estimates and part selection; for production and safety-related circuits follow component datasheets, applicable standards and measurements.

resistor color code calculator practical guide and common questions

What does a resistor color code calculator do?

IEC 60062 bands: four bands are two digits, a multiplier and a tolerance; five bands have three digits; six add a temperature coefficient. Gold and silver are only multipliers or tolerances.

Who is this for, and when is it useful?

Repair technicians, incoming inspectors, makers and students reading through-hole resistors or checking band printing.

How do I use this resistor color code calculator?

Choose 3, 4, 5 or 6 bands and pick each colour to get the value, tolerance range and temperature coefficient, or type a value to see its bands and whether it is an E-series value.

How should I interpret the results?

Values typed for lookup are rounded to two or three significant digits, with a note when rounding happens. Check the reading direction, and measure faded parts with a meter.

Where is the work performed, and which services receive data?

Band reading and lookup run in your browser; no input is uploaded.
