How to use it

  1. Enter the product name in English (material plus use works best, such as stainless steel bolt), or a 4–10 digit code.
  2. Click the closest line to see its parent headings, the three rate columns with preference programs explained, and a base-duty estimate.
  3. For Chinese-origin goods open the Chapter 99 panel to see current additional duties, and confirm with your broker whether they apply.

Reading the three rate columns

  • General: the most-favoured-nation rate for most countries, including China.
  • Special: the codes in brackets are free-trade agreements and preference programs, such as AU (Australia), KR (Korea) and S (USMCA); only goods meeting the rules of origin qualify.
  • Column 2: higher rates for Cuba, North Korea, Russia and Belarus.

Additional duties on Chinese goods

Chinese-origin goods may owe Chapter 99 additional duties on top of the general rate: Section 301 by list (generally 25% for Lists 1–3 and 7.5% for List 4A, with 25%–100% since 2024 on EVs, semiconductors, solar cells and more), IEEPA executive-order tariffs, and Section 232 duties on steel, aluminium and copper. Whether they apply depends on your code being on the relevant list, with exclusions and transition rules. The Chapter 99 panel here lists the current HTS provisions verbatim; for your product, use USTR's Section 301 search or ask a customs broker for the entry date.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits does an HS code have?

The international HS code has 6 digits: 2 for the chapter, 4 for the heading and 6 for the subheading. Countries add more: the US HTS uses 8 digits for duty plus 2 statistical digits, China uses 10, and the EU uses the 8-digit CN.

How do HS, HTS and Chinese customs codes differ?

The first 6 digits are the WCO Harmonized System, shared worldwide. The US extends them to 8 digits for duty rates and 10 for statistics (the HTS); China extends them to 10 digits for its own tariff. For the same product the first 6 digits usually match, while later digits and rates differ by country.

How much duty do Chinese exports to the US pay?

The HTS general rate, plus the Chapter 99 additional duties that apply to Chinese goods (Section 301 at 7.5%–100% by list, IEEPA executive-order tariffs, and Section 232 on steel, aluminium and more), plus fees such as MPF and HMF. Whether an additional duty applies depends on the code being on the relevant list, and these change often, so have a US customs broker confirm for the entry date.

Is the code I find guaranteed to be right?

No. Classification follows the General Rules of Interpretation on material, function and use, so two products both called "fans" may fall under different codes. For important shipments check CBP rulings (CROSS), ask your broker, or request a binding ruling.

HS code lookup practical guide and common questions

What does a HS code lookup do?

The first 6 digits are the worldwide HS subheading and the last 4 are US duty and statistical detail; results are indented by level so you can see the chapter and heading.

Who is this for, and when is it useful?

Export, forwarding and documentation staff who need HS codes for customs declarations, invoices and packing lists.

How do I use this HS code lookup?

Enter the product name in English, find the 6-digit HS subheading and US 10-digit code in the results, check the heading descriptions and copy the code into your documents.

How should I interpret the results?

Other countries' later digits and rates differ; check China's 10-digit codes with the General Administration of Customs.
