Frequently asked questions

Will formatting change the styles?

No. Only whitespace, line breaks and spacing around colons and semicolons change; selectors, properties and values stay the same.

Is my code uploaded?

No. The engines download from this site and run in your browser; your code never passes through our servers or any third party, so it is safe for internal code and configuration.

How large can files be?

Up to 5 MB per file; above 300 KB the page waits for the button instead of formatting as you type, to keep the browser responsive.

CSS formatter practical guide and common questions

What does a CSS formatter do?

Prettier 3's PostCSS parser supports CSS, SCSS and Less: one declaration per line, one selector per line, nested rules and @media indented by depth, colours and values as written.

Who is this for, and when is it useful?

Front-end developers, theme customisers and marketers editing site styles who need to read a one-line stylesheet or tidy SCSS and Less.

How do I use this CSS formatter?

Paste CSS, SCSS or Less to get one declaration per line with clear nesting and media queries.

How should I interpret the results?

Layout only; property validity is not checked, and broken braces or missing semicolons are reported with line and column.

Where is the work performed, and which services receive data?

Stylesheets are formatted in your browser and never uploaded.
